At State Fair Park, a Memorable Memorial Day Caps a Rainy Weekend

Rain shortened two race days at the Lincoln oval over the three-day Memorial Day weekend—but that also means race fans will enjoy extra races on Friday nights through the July 15 Closing Day.

Jockeys opted not to ride after the first carded race on Saturday night, as rainwater stood on the track surface. Riders were back for more on Sunday, but their experiences in the first three races revealed soft, uneven spots nearing the stretch. Racing was again cancelled.

To make up the lost races, State Fair Park will card 10 races every Friday from June 1 through the end of the meet.

Monday, Memorial Day, offered a safe course and ready riders, trainers and horses. Under threatening skies that never did deliver much, the nine-race card was run on a track first rated Good and then upgraded to Fast for the final five races, including the Big Red Mile Stakes.

In the Big Red Mile, Bevys Dazzler under jockey Larren Delorme ran away from a strong bid by Blumin Attitude to score a 1-length win. Bevys Dazzler collected $12,570 in this, his first stakes win of 2007, bringing his career total to seven wins in 12 starts lifetime.
