Yearlings, weanlings and stallion shares up by double digits while figures drop for broodmares and horses of racing age

WTBA - The Washington Thoroughbred Breeders Association held their annual mixed stock sale on Sunday, December 3. Though the day was cold, the sun was a welcome relief after the storms just a few days earlier. A total of 260 horses and stallion shares were cataloged, but after the dust had settled, 33 horses and one share were withdrawn (13.1 percent), leaving 219 horses and seven shares on which to bid.

Of that number, a total of 183 horses and shares sold for a $3,671 average, up 16.8 percent from the previous year. The median was dramatically up by 55.3 percent, going from $1,500 in 2005 to $2,300 in 2006. Reserve not attained (RNAs) were up one point from 2005, holding at 17 percent.

Twenty-one weanlings were sold for an average of $1,857, up five percent from the 2005 crop. Three fillies from the Foothills Farm dispersal, through agent Griffin Place LLC, topped that category when Harold J. Barroby of Surrey, British Columbia bid $7,700 for Hip 19, a daughter of Game Plan out of multiple stakes producer Cosmetic Lift. Joseph DiPietro, of Enumclaw, bought Hip 23, a daughter of Old Topper out of a half-sister to Washington champion Commercial Choice, for $5,500. Willow Creek Farm of Fall City purchased a filly by Majesterian out of the stakes-placed, stakes-producing Secretariat matron Sweetbreads for $5,100.

Yearlings tend to dominate the December venue, and this year was no exception as 102 sold for a $5,454 average, up 30.8 percent from the previous year’s $4,170 average. It was a three-way tie for the sale topper in this category, from which the sale’s top priced offerings emerged.

The first of the trio to hit the $26,000 mark was a Mutakddim filly consigned by Rick and Debbie Pabst’s Blue Ribbon Farm. Named Fall Forest, the daughter of stakes producer Greenmountain Girl was purchased by Victory Stables and David Cooke of Kent. Leading trainer Sharon Ross, as agent, purchased Hip 104, sired by classic sire Quiet American. Out of Jaan’s Brush, a 100 percent producing half-sister to two stakes winners, the colt was one of the offerings of agent Halvorson Bloodstock Services LLC. The final yearling, Hip 133, also hitting the $26,000 mark, was a full sister to the 2005 winter sale topper and 2006 stakes winner Wild Cycle. The daughter of Free At Last—Northern Whirl who was purchased by Frank L. Gaunt, owner of Wild Cycle, was consigned by Griffin Place LLC, agent for Carnation Racing Stable.

Of the 64 broodmares and broodmare prospects going through the ring, 47 sold for an average of $1,595, down 19.3 percent from the $1,975 average for the older distaff set. Tops among the offerings was Hip 196, the nine-year-old mare Blue Yodel. Consigned by Ben-Ben Farms and West Hills Farm, the stakes-placed daughter of Nicholas out of stakes winner and multiple stakes producer Stray, was purchased by Jerry and Gail Schneider’s Riverbend Farm in Auburn for $12,000. In addition to her pedigree and race record, another attraction to Blue Yodel was the fact that she is carrying a foal from the final crop of four-time leading Washington sire Slewdledo.

Multiple stakes producer Prado’s Joy, the 12-year-old daughter of El Prado (Ire)—Joy’s Jo Jo, who was the highest selling broodmare at the 2005 Winter Sale, was repurchased by her former owners David and Elaine Parks and their Fell Hill Farm in Enumclaw. The multiple stakes producer, who was consigned by Woodstead Farm, agent, was not bred.

These preliminary results are subject to change. Complete results of the 2006 WTBA Winter Mixed Sale may be found late afternoon (December 4) on our website at
