Nov. 20 - Los Alamitos Race Course, Cypress, CA - Over 1,000 Quarter Horse weanlings have been nominated to the 2008 Golden State Million Futurity, an increase of 33.4% from last year's original nominations numbers for the 2007 Golden State Million.

"The numbers for this race are amazing," said Los Alamitos Race Course owner Ed Allred. "The Golden State Futurity was a race that was on life support in the early 1990s, so it is a wonderful surprise to see such strong figures for the 2008 running of this race."

Guaranteed to feature a $1 million purse, the Golden State Million Futurity is the second leg of the Los Alamitos Cash Bonanza, which also comprises of the Ed Burke Million Futurity and the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, which is the sport's only guaranteed $2 million dollar race.

The exact number of nominees as of November 18 for the 2008 running of the Golden State Million Futurity is 1,003. The Golden State Million features $100,000 in added money and is open to foals of 2006. Horsemen can still late nominate their weanlings on or before December 1, 2006 for $200. The late nomination fee includes a penalty of $100 plus the original nomination fee of $100. The next sustaining payment is on April 1, 2007 when $100 is due

For the 2005 Golden State Million Futurity, which was the first year the race was guaranteed to feature a $1 million purse, there were a total of 643 weanlings nominated. The number of nominations increased to 717 for the 2006 running before rising again to 752 for next year's Golden State Million running. But despite the steady increases, no one expected such a significant increase in nominations for the 2008 Golden State Million.

"Since the Golden State Million became part of the Los Alamitos Cash Bonanza in 2005, horsemen have come to associate this race with the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity," said Melodie Knuchell, the nominations and simulcast director at Los Alamitos. "And the horsemen really want to be part of both of these million dollar races. The fact that both of these races come late in the year gives owners the option to be patient while allowing their 2-year-olds to mature. Owners can bring their babies along slowly with the knowledge that they have these two rich races at the end of the year.

"I've also noticed this year that several owners that have been away from the sport for 10 years have nominated horses to the 2008 Golden State Million Futurity," added Knuchell.
