Los Alamitos Race Course, Cypress, CA (Nov 1) - The Grade 1 $700,000 Los Alamitos Super Derby, the nation's richest Quarter Horse derby this year, promises to be one of the races of the year as Governor's Cup Derby winner and likely favorite Wave Carver will take on a field that features champion millionaire Higher Fire, Grade 1 derby winner Volcom, Champions Night stakes Fishers Tale and six other standouts in Friday's 400-yard feature.

Wave Carver looked tremendous in the trials when cruising to an easy 3 1/2-length victory in the trials. He'll now try to do something that his superstar older brother Ocean Runaway could not do - win the Los Alamitos Super Derby. The winner of this race will earn $283,080 plus a berth to the prestigious Champion of Champions on December 9.

Ramon Sanchez will pilot Wave Carver from post three for trainer Paul Jones. Sanchez can tie the stakes record of four wins by a jockey if he pilots Wave Carver to victory. Jerry Nicodemus and Charles Smith currently share the stakes record.

In posting his eye-catching trial victory, Wave Carver covered the distance in :19.41. Second fastest qualifier was not as flashy but his winning time of :19.44 is certainly impressive.

"Fishers Tale ran a fabulous race," said assistant trainer Cody Joiner. "It was as mistake free of a race as you can have. He left the gate almost as fast as when he ran second in the Ed Burke Million Futurity last year. (Jockey Saul Ramirez Jr.) said Finding Nemo had him beat early but then Fishers Tale got going. I can't brag on him enough right now."

Higher Fire was the 10th fastest qualifier but no one will count out last year's champion 2-year-old filly.

"She was the 10th fastest qualifier to the Golden State Million and she ended up beating us in the final," Joiner recalled.

Here's the field in order of post position: Fishers Tale, Redwood Creek, Wave Carver, Perrys Queen Bug, Volcom, Finding Nemo, Higher Fire, Armyguy, Dash To La Jolla and Two Corona Special.
