HOBBS, New Mexico (September 27, 2006) – Sunland Fall Futurity winner One Special Shade and Hobbs America Futurity winner Royal Dash Beduino race side-by-side in the second of three trials to the $119,600 Hobbs America Derby on Sunday afternoon at Zia Park.

One Special Shade drew the outside post position in the seven-horse field while Royal Dash Beduino has the sixth post position. G.R. Carter Jr. will be aboard One Special Shade while Joe Martinez has the mount on Royal Dash Beduino.

The Davidson Ranch’s One Special Shade makes his first start since winning the Sunland Fall Futurity on Dec. 31. The gelding from the Jimmie Claridge barn found his winning form in his third career start and that win was the first of five wins in six starts.

His only defeat during that streak was a second in the Grade 1 Dash For Cash Futurity at Lone Star Park. His five wins included the New Mexico Juvenile Challenge along with the Sunland Fall Futurity.

In the Sunland Fall Futurity, One Special Shade raced to a three-quarter length win in a fast :19.14 for the 400 yards as the stronger half of an entry that went off at 1-2 odds.

Robert Roark’s Royal Dash Beduino returns to the track of his only career win when he starts in the derby trials. A year ago, One Special Shade broke his maiden when he prevailed by a nose in the Hobbs America Futurity.

The gelding returns to Zia Park after the best efforts of his 2006 campaign. He was second in his All American Derby trial and raced in the finals of the Grade 1 stakes, finishing eighth after a troubled trip.

The 440-yard Hobbs America Derby will be held on October 15 with the 10 fastest qualifiers from the trials qualifying for the derby.
