Fans may now register for the 2004 Claiming Crown Handicapping Contest at www.ntra.com. The Contest, keyed to the July 17 Claiming Crown at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minn., challenges handicappers to pick one horse in each of the 11 races on the Canterbury Park race card, including the six Claiming Crown races. The three entrants with the highest total pari-mutuel return—based on a mythical $2 win and place wager on each horse selected—will receive berths in next January’s Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas.

Round-trip airfare to Las Vegas and hotel accommodations are included with the Claiming Crown Handicapping Contest prize. The Claiming Crown Handicapping Contest will be open for selections shortly after entries are taken for the 2004 Claiming Crown on Wednesday, July 14. Entries are limited to one per person. For complete rules, visit ntra.com.

“Each year the Claiming Crown offers horseplayers one of the year’s most intriguing handicapping challenges with horses traveling to Minnesota from all over the nation,” said Keith Chamblin, senior vice president of marketing and industry relations for the NTRA. “This free contest will heighten interest and fan participation in the 2004 Claiming Crown and send three very worthy competitors to the National Handicapping Championship next January in Las Vegas.”

The NTRA is a broad-based coalition of horseracing interests, including the American Quarter Horse Association, charged with increasing popularity of horseracing and improving economic conditions for industry participants. The NTRA and Breeders' Cup Limited also conduct the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, Thoroughbred racing's year-end Championships consisting of eight races and $14 million in purses and awards and the Breeders' Cup Stakes Program. The NTRA has offices in Lexington, Ky., and New York City. NTRA press releases appear on the NTRA Web site, ntra.com.
