LOS ALAMITOS RACE COURSE, CYPRESS, CA... With 24 broodmares consigned to the 2006 Los Alamitos Equine Sale is owner Jose Santos planning to quit the sport of Quarter Horse racing in the near future?
"Absolutely not," said Santos. "I just bought three yearlings at the Schvaneveldt/Andreini Sale in August and there are a couple of yearlings at the Ruidoso Yearling Sale that I have my eyes on. I had a lot of mares at my ranch, so after talking it over with my trainer Paul Jones I decided to sell a few of them. I had 52 mares, so I'll still have 28 at my ranch."
His broodmare consignment at the two-day sale on October 7 & 8 is second only to Ed Allred's 32-mare consignment. Among his two-dozen mares in the catalog, Santos will sell 17 that are believed to be in foal to 2004 champion aged stallion Buccaneer Beach. Four are believed to be in foal to Walk Thru Fire and two are believed to be in foal to Righteous Brother.
The mares last bred to Walk Thru Fire include the Thoroughbred Babbler (Hip #158), who won five races and earned $103,347, and the Thoroughbred Furash Alert (Hip #323), a winner of four races and $23,677. Gold Alert, a stakes winner of $291,939, sired her. In addition, The Signature mare Tinsel Tango (Hip #144) won once and hit the board in five of nine career starts. Santos also consigned a recipient mare (Hip #204) carrying a 2007 foal by Buccaneer Beach out of the aforementioned mare Babbler.
Among those last bred to Buccaneer Beach, Teenish (Hip #245) is the dam of three winners including Bitterroot Futurity winner Teenster, who earned $33,606 in her career, and three-time winner Bopper. Sired by Pritzi Dash, Teenish won twice in her racing career. Corona Glitter (Hip #257) won five races and was third to Impeccable Timing in 2004 Laguna Hills Handicap at Los Alamitos. Sired by Count Corona, Corona Glitter is from the same female family as champion aged mare Royaltime Classic. Her third dam is a half-sister to Chicks Beduino's mother, A Classy Chick, and Easily A Twelve, the dam of PCQHRA Breeders Futurity winner Twelvie.
Santos also consigned Just Roses (Hip #366), who is the dam of the Walk Thru Fire filly Thru Roses, the runner-up to Wanta Dubloon in last year's Autumn Handicap. Just Roses had a solid racing career, winning 11 races and finishing third in the Grade 3 John Hoak Memorial Futurity and Manor Downs 550-Yard Stakes.
Others include Nora GVL (Hip #179) winner of the 2003 AQHYA Claiming Stakes Challenge and Devons Skys (Hip #96), whose second dam produced Ruidoso Futurity winner Saint Shackleton. The mares Middle Fork Ridge (Hip #202) and Pin Account (Hip #140) have produced numerous Thoroughbred winners in their careers. Sired by Breeders Cup Classic winner Wild Again, Middle For Ridge produced Lady Logan, a six-time winner and earner of $57,567, while Pin Account boast two runners with earnings of over $130,000 in her produce record.
The mares last bred to Righteous Brother are Rhythm And Blurr (Hip #54), a half-sister of Governor's Cup Futurity winner Jungle Raised and Vandy's Flash Handicap winner Rhythm And Val. Rhythm And Blurr is the dam of the stakes placed Paint Horse Judys Blurr. Sired by Murrtheblurr (TB), Rhythm And Blurr hit the board in four of seven starts in her racing career. The On A High mare Es Posible (Hip #253) was bred to Rightous Brother on June 3, 2006. One of her three career wins came at Los Alamitos.
