Derby winners headline Golden State trials

LOS ALAMITOS RACE COURSE, CYPRESS, CA... Wave Carver, the 3-year-old of the
moment right now after his impressive victory in the Governor's Cup Derby on
June 29, headlines the trials to the Grade 1 Golden State Derby Saturday at
Los Alamitos.
Racing for the partnership of Vessels Stallion Farm, Gary Muller, Vaughn
Cook and Dan Lucas, Wave Carver is one of 17 sophomores that will compete in
a pair of 400-yard trials. The fastest 10 horses will return to the final on
September 2.
There have been four major races for 3-year-olds here this season and the
winners of each of those races will be featured in these trials. The
derby-winning quartet is Wave Carver, Volcom, Startlet Hawk and
Wave Carver will be in action in the second trial and he's coming off a
terrific 1 1/2 length win in the $167,000 Governor's Cup in which he posted
the meet's fastest 400-yard time. He'll be facing P.K. Thomas' Volcom, the
winner of the $129,400 El Primero Del Ano Derby. Paul Jones trains both
In the other trial, Gustavo Razo's Startlet Hawk, the winner of the Grade 1
Los Alamitos Winter Derby, will take on Kirk Goodfellow's Furyofthewind, who
won the Bayer Legend California Derby by a nose on June 25. Furyofthewind
has won three of his last four starts and he'll be ridden once again by Cody
Jensen. Meanwhile, Sam Thompson, who piloted the Corona Cartel colt to
victory in the Bayer Legend, will now pilot the Donna McArthur-trained
Chicks First Fantasy.
Multiple graded stakes winner Finding Nemo will look to bounce back from a
troubled seventh place finish in his last start when he takes on
Furyofthewind and Startlet Hawk in this trial.Owned by Azevedo, Boyles
Family Trust, Muller and Horner, Finding Nemo stumbled at the of his
Governor's Cup trial on the way to only second out of the money finish in
his 12-race career.
He Could Be Streakin, a finalist in last year's Golden State Million
Futurity, and Midnight In Moscow are among the other top contenders in the
first trial. Bonos Party, who ran third in the Governor's Cup, and four-time
Grade 1 stakes finalist Love My Corona will challenge Wave Carver and Volcom
in the other trial.
