The 2006 Red Cell California Distance Challenge (G3), scheduled for August 27 at Los Alamitos, has been cancelled because of an insufficient number of nominations.

According to Darrell Hare, Senior Manager of the MBNA America® Racing Challenge, only three horses remained eligible after the last sustaining payment.

“We considered other options, including changing dates or locations, but in the end made the decision to cancel the race,” said Hare.

The California berth to the $100,000 Red Cell Distance Challenge Championship (G1) will be offered to the second-place regional finisher with the highest 2006 earnings through October 31, 2006.

The 2005 contest, billed as the MD Barns California Distance Challenge, was run with a short field of four. The winner, Joan Dale Hubbard’s Prankster CF (Favorite Trick (TB) – Stardust Dash by Dash For Cash), went on to victory in the $100,000 MD Barns Distance Challenge Championship and was named AQHA Champion Distance Horse.

The MBNA America Racing Challenge is a $5 million championship series showcasing “America’s Fastest Athlete.” A total of 59 races are held in 10 regions across the United States, Canada, Mexico and South America throughout the year, culminating in the MBNA America Challenge Championships, scheduled this year for November 11, 2006, at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas.
