Los Alamitos (August) - Effective with the Thursday, August 17 racing program, Quarter Horses ages 3 and upward will benefit from either a 20 percent purse increase or a $1,000 purse hike - which ever figure is higher - on overnight races across the board, said Los Alamitos Racing Secretary Ron Church.

"We know our horsemen are working hard to help Los Alamitos put together as competitive a racing program as possible and we appreciate their hard work," Church said. "The owners and trainers of Quarter Horses will enjoy this purse increase and perhaps we'll see a few more older Quarter Horses and 3-year-old sprinters competing here as we enter the second half of the meet.

“We're looking forward to an exciting fall and winter season of competitive Quarter Horse racing at Los Alamitos."

The two levels of allowance races each boosts of at least $2,000, with fields with 10-horses now featuring a $16,700 purse. Overnight handicap races now boast a $17,000 purse.

A 10-horse field of $30,000 claimers will now race for $13,700 - up from $12,200. As another example, a full 10-horse field of $12,500 claimers will now chase an $11,100 purse - up from $9,600.

At the lower rungs of the ladder, purses for $6,250 claimers will increase from $8,000 to $9,200 for a 10-horse field, while purses for $2,500 claimers went up from $6,300 to $7,300, based on a field of 10.

"Los Alamitos is famous for having the richest stakes program for Quarter Horses in the country," Church added. "We strongly feel that it's very important to show our appreciation for the every day, hard-knocking runners, such as the older Quarter Horses."
