Los Alamitos Race Course, Cypress, CA - The 7th annual California Breeders Champions Night delivered the goods, as the 12-race program was highlighted by scintillating stakes record efforts from Be A Bono and Wave Carver to go along with the first dead-heat for the win in the history of the Governor's Cup Futurity courtesy of Tac It Like A Man and Checknbac on Saturday, July 29, at Los Alamitos.

Champions Night also featured the return of last year's champion 3-year-old filly Apollitical Time, who narrowly escaped the 400-yard Matron Stakes for distaffers with a victory, as well as the comeback appearance of champion millionaire filly Higher Fire, who ran a courageous third after a nightmare start when running third to Fishers Tale in the Jens L. List Memorial Stakes for 3-year-olds.

In addition to great racing, Champions Night enjoyed positive business figures across the board. The all-source handle for the twelve live races plus eight simulcast races was $1,956,076, ranking it as the third highest in the history of Champions Night. The handle figure is also the overall 18th highest single night handle in the 56-year history of Los Alamitos.

Even more encouraging for track officials is the fact that the twelve Champions Night live races handled an averaged of $148,138 per race - a substantial increase of 12.8 percent from last year's per race average handle of $131,246. Ironically, the record all-source handle for a Champions Night card of $2,009,546 was set last year, but that program featured 14 live races in addition to the simulcast-racing program of out of state races.
