Strawkins dominated the field in the $269,817 Rainbow Derby at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico on July 22, breaking a track record set by Snow Big Deal in 2003 in the process and posting a speed index of 107. The gelded son of Hawkinson out of Shirleys Strawfly, by Strawfly Special, crossed the wire a length and 3/4 the best in a time of :20.736 for the 440 yards with Cody Jensen at the reins for trainer Paul Jones. Donald and Peggy Boyle of Madras, Oregon own and bred the horse. Snow Big Deal’s previous track record was :20.946.

Strawkins broke from the one-hole and stumbled at the start, but quickly picked himself up and had the lead. Separate Tac was second with Freddie Martinez at the reins for owner Rancho Vista Partners. Jones also trains Separate Tac.

Strawkins earned $134,909 for this win, making his career bankroll worth $245,427. Earlier this season, he won the Bayer Legend New Mexico Challenge at Ruidoso. He started the year with a seventh place finish in the Los Alamitos Winter Derby.

Strawkins won last year’s Pot O’ Gold Futurity at Sun Downs in Kennewick, Washington, setting a new track record there in that race, as well as winning the Canada Cup Quarter Horse Futurity at Whoop-Up Downs in Lethbridge and the Holiday Handicap at Los Alamitos.

His record is now 10 wins (5 stakes) with 1 second and 1 third (1 stakes) in 13 starts.

The Boyles have also campaigned Mr Eye Will, by Mr Eye Opener and also out of their mare Shirleys Strawfly, which won the 2003 Bayer Legend Canada Derby Challenge and the Charlie Russell Derby in Kalispell, Montana.

Second place finisher Separate Tac earned $43,171 of the total purse. In third was Real Good Man with Joe Martinez at the reins for owner Gene White and trainer C. Gilbreath. Third was worth $21,586.
