Auburn, WA (June 25) - She was bred in Kentucky and is based in Canada, but the luck of the Irish was with Sophie's Trophy on Sunday as the filly won the $40,000 Irish Day Handicap at Emerald Downs.

Trained by Janet Armstrong, the 3-year-old daughter of the Valid Wager has won all three starts in her career. In addition to Sunday's victory, the filly has won a maiden race and the $50,000 Langley Handicap, both coming at 6 furlongs at Hastings Park.

In the Irish Day Handicap, the filly's first attempt at a mile, Sophie's Trophy broke from the fourth post with Kevin Krigger in the irons. The pair came out of the gate a bit awkwardly and bumped with She's All Silk, who was in post three.

"She's always slow at the break," Armstrong said. "She did have more trouble this time and I was a little concerned, but I know she always has a good finish."

After the slow break, Sophie's Trophy was nearly 15 lengths behind coming out of the clubhouse turn, as Sendipity and Diamond Dollars set fractions of 22 3/5 seconds at the quarter mile and 46 2/5 at the half mile.

At the three-eighths pole, the filly kicked in another gear and started passing horses. By the head of the stretch, she was within striking distance of the lead. "She wasn't standing perfect in the gate and she set me back further than I wanted," Krigger said. "I knew I won the race at the five-eights pole."

Down the stretch, a battle for the win emerged between Sophie's Trophy and a hard charging Chestnut Lady, with Kevin Radke in the irons. "I had a perfect trip," Radke said. "She dug in and ran to the wire. I just couldn't get by that other one (Sophie's Trophy)."

Sophie's Trophy beat Chestnut Lady by a neck at the wire, finishing the race in 1:36 2/5. She returned $5.60, $3 and $3 for the win. Chestnut Lady paid $6.20 and $3.80 for second while Langara Lass brought in $4.80 for show.

Completing the order of finish was She's All Silk, No Ka Oi, Musical Wine, The Case Queen, Diamond Dollars, Sendipity and Forty Colors.
