Ruidoso Downs, New Mex. (May 29) ó Ben Chaconís Curlys Fortune held off a late challenge by favored Bang to score a mild upset victory in the $40,000 Fine Loom Handicap at 870 yards at Ruidoso Downs on Monday afternoon.

Makamaddash sprinted to the lead from the outside post position in the eight-horse field and maintained his lead to the top of the stretch. Curlys Fortune, with J.R. Valenzuela board, rallied from striking position to take the lead and pulled away to a clear advantage 200 yards from the wire.

Bang, winner of three of his previous four starts, made his expected late run deep in the stretch but came up 1/2-length short at the wire. Dreaming Of Roses rallied to finish third, 2-1/4 lengths behind Bang.

The Martin Orona-trained Curlys Fortune picked up his first win from three 2006 starts. In his two previous starts, each a Sunland Park 870-yard allowance race, he was sent off as the strong favorite but was never a threat in either race after stumbling at the start.

Last year, Curlys Fortune started seven times with two wins and a three second-place finishes.

Sent off at 8-1, Curlys Fortune paid $17.60, $5.60 and $4.00. The 8-5 favorite Bang returned $2.80 and $2.60. Dreaming Of Roses was worth $3.80. The $2 exacta paid $36.80 and the $1 trifecta was worth $126.20.

Racing resumes on Thursday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs with All American Futurity third-place finisher Brindis Por Cayenne in the trials to the Bayer Legend Derby. First post time for the nine-race card is 1 pm.
