Auburn, WA (May 27) - Nominations for the 11th running of the Pepsi-Cola Handicap on June 4 closed May 27 with 15 sophomore colts and geldings named as possible starters in the 6 -furlong affair. Trainer Bill Tollett, who won the Federal Way Handicap last week with the 3-year-old filly Diamond Dollars, is looking to annex his second sophomore stakes event of the meet, and has nominated his newly acquired colt Keagan to the race.

Claimed for $80,000 out of an optional claiming turf allowance at Hollywood Park on May 17, Keagan is the leading money-earner among the nominees with $137,259 banked in 11 career starts. The Washington-bred son of Basket Weave won the $40,000 Arizona Juvenile to close out his 2-year-old season before returning in February to take the $75,000 Turf Paradise Derby. If Keagan runs in the Pepsi-Cola Handicap it would mark his first career start inside his home state.

Trainer Howard Belvoir has nominated both of his stable's sophomore stars to the Pepsi-Cola Handicap, Courting Seattle and Tusko T. Courting Seattle, the winner of the Auburn Stakes on May 7, has won three of four career starts. The son of Doneraile Court's only defeat came in the 2005 edition of the Emerald Express, where he finished second to stablemate Tusko T., beaten less than a length.

The runner-up from the Auburn Stakes, Ballou Slew, has also been nominated to the Pepsi-Cola Handicap. The son of Slewdledo has won four of six starts in his career, including a pair of stakes victories at Portland Meadows. In early February the Jim Fergason trainee was victorious in the Flying Lark, and has since returned to take the Preview Stakes.
