Wagering and attendance records set as Turf Paradise’s 50th Anniversary Season closes

Turf Paradise Race Coure, Phoenix, AZ (May 21) – Alcres George captured the victory in the live race finale, the $50,000 Hasta la Vista Handicap, as Turf Paradise concluded it 50th anniversary season Sunday in the best possible way: with new attendance and handle records.

“Everyone worked so hard to make Turf’s 50th year the best ever,” said track owner Jerry Simms. “I’m happy for our employees and for the track’s success. We’ll have new goals to shoot for next season.”

A 156-day live meet will run from opening day October 6 through May 6, 2007.

Management was not the only beneficiary of the record meet. Horsemen received over $1.2 million increase in their purses from the previous season.

“This year’s record numbers reflect the growing potential of horse racing in Arizona,” said Eugene Joyce, who is completing his first season as the track’s general manager. “I thank our horsemen for contributing to this success.”

Ridden by Wilson Dieguez, Alcres George ($24.00) covered the marathon 1 7/8 over firm turf in 3:13.2. Mino Ona was a length and a quarter back in second with Western Act third in the field of 11 older horses. The winner is trained by Joy Toye.

The track’s economic growth indicators of attendance and handle for the 166-day live meet set new standards when compared to last season’s figures.
