Auburn, WA (May 6) - The second leg of the Belle Roberts series for older fillies and mares, the $40,000 Hastings Park Handicap to be run Sunday, May 14, has drawn an impressive list of 17 nominees, including several stakes winners, and a trio of Canadian invaders.

Trainer Robert Anderson has nominated a pair of runners looking to invade from Hastings Park. Regal Red is the top money earner in the field with $185,480 banked and a 7-2-0 record from nine starts. Last year the 5-year-old won the Strawberry Morn stakes at Hastings when covering 6 furlongs, the same distance as the Hastings Park Handicap.

Regal Red finished second in the Cover Girl Handicap on August 21 at Hastings and has not raced since. In 2004, the daughter of On Target reeled off five straight stakes victories at Hastings.

Anderson's second nominee is Slewpast, with $181,934 in earnings and a 7-2-0 record from 12 lifetime starts. Last season at Hastings, the 4-year-old filly was victorious in three straight 1 1/16-mile stakes events, and won a total of five stakes at the Canadian park, winning twice at the distance of 6 furlongs. Slewpast has started just once this year, in the Brighouse Belles, where the filly finished sixth in a seven-horse field.

Virtuous Lady, who has campaigned at several tracks throughout her career, comes off a winning effort at Hastings Park where she easily took care of a group of $50,000 optional claiming allowance rivals. The John Snow trained 4-year-old has won just four of 22 starts, but has finished in the money 14 times.

Three of last year's top Emerald Downs females who were honored at the end of the season have been nominated to the Hastings Park Handicap.

The winner of last year's edition of the race, the Frank Lucarelli-trained mare Marva Jean, will look to defend her Hastings Park title. The 6-year-old daughter of West By West, out of the mare Chasseur Dame, won two stakes and an overnight handicap last year, finishing her 2005 campaign with a 4-0-1 record from eight starts. She was honored as the Top Sprinter of 2005 at Emerald Downs. Marva Jean has earned $144,520 in her career.

Trainer Tim McCanna has nominated Queenledo to the Hastings Park. Last year, the Slewdledo filly was honored as the Top 3-year-old Filly at Emerald Downs. She won three consecutive stakes at Emerald last year, taking the U. S. Bank Stakes and the Federal Way Handicap while sprinting, before taking the Irish Day Handicap going 1 mile.

The 2005 Top Older Filly or Mare at Emerald Downs, Karis Makaw, has been nominated to the Hastings Park by trainer Bob Meeking. The 5-year-old mare by Charismatic won two stakes at Emerald last year, the King County Handicap at 1 mile and the Boeing Handicap covering 1 1/16 miles. Karis Makaw exits an optional claiming allowance where she finished fifth while facing several rivals that have been nominated here. Karis Makaw has a 5-3-1 record from 14 starts lifetime and has earned $124,182.

Trainer Bud Klokstad has nominated Swing' Notes to the Hastings Park. The 5-year-old daughter of French Deputy won the Irish Day Handicap in 2004, but made only two starts last year, finishing third in an optional claiming allowance and fifth in the Hastings Park. Swingn' Notes returned to the track on opening weekend of the 2006 meet where she finished second in the April 22nd feature, won by Kissntheboysgoodby, who has also been nominated to the Hastings Park.

Other notable nominees include the Grant Forster-trained filly A Classic Life, winner of the $100,000 Washington Breeders' Cup Oaks in 2005, and Gins Majesty, the heroine of last year's Kent Handicap.
