American Quarter Horse Day at the Races at Arapahoe Park

Aurora, Colorado, May 1 – Track officials from Mile High Racing & Entertainment at Arapahoe Park in conjunction with representatives of the Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Association (RMQHA) have announced the activities to be held at the July 30 American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Day at the Races.
In addition to four stakes events carded for the Sunday event, there will be a chariot racing demonstration, children’s face painting, a caricaturist, a new owners seminar, stick horse races, jockey autograph table, backstretch tours, Youth Racing Experience and Scholarship Program, handicapping seminar, a test ride on a Quarter Horse, and a sponsorship area. AQHA Day at the Races typically generates one of the largest attendance days at the Aurora oval.

“Our primary goal is gain exposure of the American Quarter Horse to as many fans as possible attending this outstanding event,” said Tony Gasich, Vice President of Racing of the Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Association. “We are hoping to build and improve upon last year’s successes. We have expanded our family activities and are partnering with a local radio station to publicize the day. We have put together two wonderful packages for our guests that offer a tremendous value and a day of fun at the races. It should be another exciting day.”

In addition to the activities for the children the Youth Racing Experience and Scholarship Program offers up to twenty-four (24) children the opportunity to get an up close, behind the scenes look at horse racing. The seminar covers July 29 as well and offers participants the chance to work with trainers, track management and many others involved in the operation of racing. Participants that complete the program are eligible to compete for scholarships funded by the Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Association Race Division and the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program. This year $2,500 will be awarded in scholarships.

The New Owners Seminar has been expanded in 2006 to increase the interest and excitement of the activities and to allow attendees to have more time to participate in event prior to the start of the race program. At 8:30 am an AQHA DVD will be shown, following the welcoming, which covers the basics of ownership.
At 9:00 am, attendees will receive a backstretch barn tour where they will see a trainer’s barn, the starting gate and the test barn. They will get the opportunity to interact with a trainer to discuss what it takes to get a horse to the races.
Round Table Discussions and Various Presentations will be held from 10:00 am through 11:30 am covering topics such as Breeding versus Buying, Taxation and Feeding and Nutrition.
The morning concludes at 11:30 am with the awarding of Honorary Racehorse Ownerships. Lucky guests will receive ownership in an American Quarter Horse and will win the opportunity to attend the races in style for each race that horse participates in throughout Arapahoe Park’s 2006 season.

Two special offers are being extended to racing fans on AQHA Day at the Races at Arapahoe Park. The Club House Guest Package offers a first class experience at the races. For a $15.00 donation each VIP guest will receive Admission, Preferred Club House Seating, a Special Welcome Reception, Buffet Bar-B-Que Lunch, Racing Program, Optional Tours and are eligible for a variety of door prizes to be drawn throughout the afternoon. Option two is The Family Package and is available for $5.00. This package offers admission for two, two hot dogs, two sodas and a racing program.

Top racing events showcase the July 30 card including the $90,000 estimated Rocky Mountain Futurity, the $30,000 W/SW Bayer Legend Derby Challenge, the $25,000 estimated W/SW John Deere Distaff Challenge and the $15,000 added RMQHA Championship. Post time for the nine-race program is set for 1:00 pm.

In a related matter, it was announced there was the creation of the Ryel Pluming, Inc. All Distance Series to be conducted throughout the course of the Arapahoe Park Meeting. Five events will be held to determine the champion at five different distances. The following dates have been selected: June 24 (330 yards), July 8 (350 yards), July 22 (400 yards), August 5 (440 yards) and August 26 (550 yards). The event is for three-year-olds and upward which have started for a claiming price of $10,000 or less in 2005-2006.

Arapahoe Park will conduct a thirty-nine (39) day race meet beginning on Saturday, June 10. Racing will be conducted on a three-day per week schedule (Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays) and the meet will conclude on Labor Day, September 4. A special July 4th holiday card will be run on the Tuesday holiday. Post time for all racing days is set for 1:00 p.m.
