RUIDOSO DOWNS RACE TRACK AND CASINO (April 11, 2006) – West Texas Futurity winner Jess Destined, owned by J and L Stables, could make his next start in the trials to the Grade 1, $500,000 (est.) Ruidoso Futurity on May 26.

Trained by Ruidoso Downs resident Carl Draper, Jess Destined scored a mild upset on Sunday afternoon at Sunland Park when he won the West Texas Futurity, the season’s first Grade 1 futurity, at nearly 6-1 odds. He won by ˝-length in :15.248 for 300 yards. The Ruidoso Futurity is held at 350 yards and the late-running style of Jess Destined indicates the additional 50 yards should appeal to the colt.

Veteran trainer Draper won the 2004 All American Futurity and swept the Ruidoso, Rainbow and All American derbies at Ruidoso Downs in 2005 with reigning world champion DM Shicago.

West Texas Futurity fastest-qualifier and favorite Jess Charming is also eligible to the Ruidoso Futurity. He won his first two career races before finishing in fifth place in the West Texas Futurity.

The Ruidoso Futurity trials are the traditional opening-day highlight for the Ruidoso Downs’ summer season. The horses with the 10 fastest qualifying times from the trials will be eligible to return for the rich finals on June 11.

Two-year-old Quarter Horses will also be racing in the $625,000 (est.) Rainbow Futurity (July 23) and the $2-million (est.) All American Futurity (Sept. 4).

The Ruidoso Downs season offers a projected record $5.4 million in purses, up from $4 million in 2005.
