April 3, Los Alamitos Race Course, Cypress, CA - Track record holders Aladim Bryan SA and Quality Corona are among the 14 older horses nominated to the Grade 3 $25,000 Kaweah Bar Handicap to be held at 350 yards on Saturday, April 8 at Los Alamitos.

Owned by Gianni Franco Samaja and trained by Felix Gonzalez, Aladim Bryan SA set the 550-yard track record when he won the Bellflower Handicap in a time of :26.54 on January 14. In the process, he broke the record previously held by Scott Lewis since 1982.

Sired by Blazen Bryan, the 5-year-old Brazilian-bred horse will be looking to score a stakes win at his third different distance this year. Aladim Bryan Sa also won the PCQHRA Stakes at 440 yards back on November 5.

EG High Desert Farms’ Quality Corona owns the track record at 100 yards, which he set in the 100-Yard Sprint Stakes last year. But don’t disregard Quality Corona as just a little speed rocket, as the Corona Czech gelding qualified to the 400-yard Grade 1 Winter Championship, where he finished sixth to Gold Medal Jess. Quality Corona also won an allowance race on March 18.

There are total of 11 four-year-olds among the 14 nominees. Pritzi Express is an allowance winner here on March 10 and runner-up in the Paul Ford Handicap to Gold Medal Jess. The red-hot Gonna Get Em Hi and stakes runner-up Budj figure to be among the other top contenders.

A gelding by Jazzin Hi, Gonna Get Em Hi has won three straight races for owner Julian Morfin, while the Adan Farias-trained Budj is looking to make his first start since running second in the Bayer Legend California Challenge on July 1.

Aries Man, Boyhood, Just A Lane Change, Looking For Dust, Rhythm And Val, Sassy Corona and Show Me Your Moon are the other 4-year-olds in this race. In addition to Aladim Bryan SA, the two other 5-year-old nominees are Los Alamitos Winter Championship runner-up Apollos Favorite and the Red Hot Rhythm gelding Rhythm With Rhythm.

Lester Family Racing Stable’s Apollos Favorite and Melvin Bollenbach’s Sassy Corona were also nominated to the Grade 3 $35,000 Miss Princess Handicap for 3-year-old fillies and mares at 350 yards.

To be run on Friday, April 7, the Miss Princess is named in honor of the 2005 Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee. A 1944 foal bred by Robert Cauthorn of Comstock, Texas, Miss Princess was a daughter of El Sappho (TB) stallion Fool’s Gold. Miss Princess is best remembered for her many match races in the 1940s. Her connections would often cover her body with mud so that no one could recognize her before she raced.

Sassy Corona will be going after her fourth stakes win at Los Alamitos when she runs in the Miss Princess.

“I wanted to make sure Sassy Corona competed in a stakes race this weekend so that’s why I also nominated her to the Miss Princess,” Jones said. “But she’ll definitely be running in the Miss Princess. I know that Apollos Favorite will probably go in the Miss Princess but we’re not afraid of her. Apollos Favorite is certainly a very nice mare but I think Sassy Corona can beat her, especially at 350 yards. Apollos Favorite likes the extra distance and I think that if Sassy Corona gets a good break, we’ll win the race.”

Sassy Corona won the Fullerton Handicap on February 18 and was the third place finisher to Texas Chatterbox in the Grade 1 Charger Bar Handicap. A winner of six of 12 starts and $96,427 in her career, the daughter of Corona Cartel won the Pocahontas and First Place Queen handicaps last year.

Apollos Favorite has won six of 30 starts in her career with her best results being a victory in the Grade 2 Las Damas Handicap last year and a second place finish in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Championship. A good effort in the Miss Princess will push her career earnings over the $200,000 mark. A Champion of Champions finalist last year, Apollos Favorite has earned $197,359 in her career.

A Mere Fame, Dancing Iam, Fast Carpet Ride, Just As You Are, Ladybud Flyzhome, Romanticist and That Lovely Day have also been nominated.
