ALTOONA, IA-Hats off to Prairie Meadows exercise rider Erin McMahon, the winning rider of the camel race on May 14.

McMahon rode Ali Babba, one of four camels trained and managed by Joe Hedrick of World Class Productions out of Hutchinson, Kansas. Ali Babba covered one-sixteenth of a mile in 17-2/5 seconds. McMahon gallops horses for thoroughbred trainer J. Larry Jones.

Finishing second was jockey Terry Thompson aboard Clyde, followed by Joe Johnson [Little Sheba]. Jockey Kelly Murray was uninjured after being thrown from Sarah Sam after the camel ducked out about 20 yards from the finish.

"It was fun," said Erin McMahon following the race. "They broke from the gate in a pretty straight line, but I think it might have been the first time for the camels running under the lights."

McMahon was third aboard Big Bird in Saturday's ostrich race.

Exercise rider/jockey valet Randy Hofer was the only rider to remain on his mount, falling off Super Chick just inches before the wire in the ostrich race on May 15. The other ostrich riders included Terry Thompson [2nd-Crazy Legs]; Luis Ranilla [4th-Tweety Bird]; and Jason Eads [5th-Chickenhearted]. The rider of Dixie Chick [6th] was an employee of World Class Productions. The time of the ostrich race was 16-2/5 seconds.
