Shakopee, MN — Owners residing in nearly every area of North America where Thoroughbred racing is conducted are represented on the list of 281 horses released this week as nominees to Claiming Crown 2004. The $550,000 day of racing will be held Saturday, July 17 at Canterbury Park.

Claiming Crown is a unique event limited to those runners who have started at least once in the last year for claiming prices ranging from $5,000 to $25,000. The six-race program is highlighted by the mile and one-eighth, $150,000 Continental Diamond Jewel.

Canterbury Park will be hosting Claiming Crown for the fifth time this summer and, as in the past, runners campaigning now in Florida, Texas, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, California and throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, are likely to be shipped to the suburban Minneapolis track for this Breeders’ Cup-type day for “blue-collar” runners.

Fields are expected to include horses owned by Michael Gill and Rick Englander, currently two-three nationally according to money won, and trained by Steve Asmussen and Scott Lake, one-two nationally according to races won.

Pre-entries for Claiming Crown 2004 will be taken Tuesday, July 6, with the final entry date being Wednesday, July 14.
