American Quarter Horse racing’s richest stakes program will offer even more racing opportunities in 2006 as AQHA launches the MBNA America® Challenge Supplemental Stakes Program.
The MBNA America Quarter Horse Racing Challenge is a purse and bonus awards program that encompasses 58 races at racetracks in 10 regions in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and culminates with the MBNA America Challenge Championships held each fall.  The regional series was developed by AQHA to increase racing opportunities for older horses and is expanding its slate this year with the formation of the Supplemental Stakes Program.
This new stakes lineup is designed to offer racing opportunities to Challenge-enrolled horses at racetracks across the country that do not host regional qualifying races for the MBNA America Racing Challenge program.
“The Challenge Supplemental Stakes is a great way to reach Challenge-enrolled horses in areas that don’t host regional Challenge Championship qualifying races,” said Ryan Sherman, Senior Director of the Racing Challenge. “By working with tracks in these areas, we are able to provide new options for Challenge customers that might not have the opportunity to participate in the program otherwise.”
In 2006, the Challenge Supplemental Stakes series will feature 14 races at 11 different racetracks in seven states.  Challenge-enrolled horses who participate in these selected races will be eligible for a supplement paid out by the Challenge program, based on their finish.  While the Challenge Supplemental Stakes do not carry berths to any of the six Challenge Championship races, horses may still qualify for Challenge-preferred undercard races.
“This allows the Challenge program to give back to everyone who supports the program, and it gives an owner at least 14 more reasons to enroll his or her racing prospect in a great national racing program for America’s Fastest Athlete,” Sherman added.
The first Supplemental Stakes, the Rillito Park Challenge Shootout, is scheduled to run Sunday, February 12.  By the looks of early nominations, the program is proving to be popular. In early nominations, 17 horses crossed the nomination box.
