Aurora, Colorado – Officials at Arapahoe Park announced this morning the 2006 Quarter Horse Stakes Schedule. In excess of $490,000 will be distributed over the nine-race schedule run during the June 10 – September 4 racing season. Two added events and seven estimated events comprise the schedule highlighted by the $100,000 est. Mile High Futurity and the $90,000 est. Rocky Mountain Futurity. Two of the nine events are restricted to Colorado Bred Quarter Horses.

“We are very excited about the racing opportunities this year at Arapahoe Park,” said Tony Gasich, Vice President Race Division of the Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Association. “The stakes and allowance schedule has been modified to help create racing opportunities for both young and older horses alike. It should be a fun and exciting season.”

The top two events in the state will be contested by two-year-olds. The $100,000 estimated Mile High Futurity will be contested on Saturday September 2, 2006. The 400 yard event typically showcases the top two-year-olds in the region. Trials for the Futurity will be conducted Saturday August 19, 2006 with the top ten qualifiers (as measured by fastest times) qualifying for the final. Last year, Galen Hill & Kathy Stoker-Hill’s Roskoze upset the field to capture the $128,835 Final. The Mike Casselman trainee stopped the teletimer in 0:20.08. Veteran reinsman and legendary jockey Jacky Martin rode the winner who returned $18.60 to his backers.

The $90,000 estimated Rocky Mountain Futurity will be run on Sunday July 30, 2006. The Rocky Mountain will be run at the distance of 350 yards with Trials held on Saturday July 15, 2006. Last year, Bill & Martha Drake’s Myra Me captured the $91,000 event while stopping the clock in 0:17.87 seconds. The Chris Gadarilla trainee was well handled by Arapahoe Park leading Quarter Horse rider Russell Vicchrilli. The winner returned $7.20.

Two Colorado-bred events are back in 2006. The $75,000 estimated Cherry Creek Futurity features two-year-olds at 330 yards and will be run on Saturday July 1, 2006. Trials for the Cherry Creek will be held two weeks in advance of the Final on June 17, 2006. The $65,000 estimated Lucile Rowe Derby will showcase three-year-olds at 350 yards. The Lucile Rowe will be run on Saturday July 1, 2006 as well with Trials also being contested on June 17, 2006.

Other races on the schedule include the $30,000 estimated West/Southwest Bayer Legend Derby Challenge (July 30, 400 yards) and the $75,000 estimated Mile High Derby (September 2, 400 yards) for three-year-olds. Older horses have their place in the schedule as well with the $15,000 added Dash for Speed (June 11, 330 yards), the $25,000 estimated West/Southwest John Deere Challenge (July 30, 400 yards) and the $15,000 added RMQHA Championship (July 30, 400 yards).

Arapahoe Park will conduct a thirty-nine (39) day race meet beginning on Saturday June 10, 2006. Racing will be conducted on a three-day per week schedule (Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays) and the meet will conclude on Labor Day, September 4, 2006. A special July 4th holiday card will be run on the Tuesday holiday. Post time for all racing days is set for 1:00 p.m. mt.
