Champion Higher Fire will make her debut for new owner Julianna Hawn Holt when she headlines the trials to the $210,550 Los Alamitos Winter Derby on Friday, Feb. 3, at Los Alamitos.

A total of 33 sophomores will compete in the qualifying races for the first Grade 1 Quarter Horse stakes of the year. The horses with the 10 fastest times move on to the final on February 24.

Holt, wife of San Antonio Spurs owner Peter Holt, bought Higher Fire from Dutch Masters III last week for an undisclosed amount. The 3-year-old filly is an exciting broodmare prospect for Holt’s superstar band of mares, which also includes Higher Fire’s dam, Higher Math, and the legendary champion Corona Chick.

But there’s still plenty of high quality racing left for Higher Fire following a freshman campaign that included wins in the Golden State Million and Ed Burke Million Futurity and a second place finish in the Los Alamitos Million.

Higher Fire will be in action in the second of four trials, which also features Million finalists Cut The Snow, Wanta Dubloon and He Storms.

J. Garvan Kelly and Nancy Yearsley’s Value The Man will start in the third trial - his first start since winning the $1.5 million Los Alamitos Million. Value The Man was named the PCQHRA champion 2-year-old gelding last week.

Wave Carver, younger brother of California Horse of the Year Ocean Runaway, Kindergarten Futurity winner Gold Nugget Rd and Vandi Chick, who won all six of her starts last year, will also race in the trials.
