Ardell Sayler picks up seventh Assiniboia title

Assiniboia Downs concluded the 2005 live racing season on Sunday, September 25, with a total wagering handle of $8,315.573.47. The on-track wagering total was $5,792,775.53 and the simulcast partners wagering total amounted to $2,522,797.94. This compared with the 2004 handle of $8,857,499.41, which consisted of the 2004 on-track wagering of $6,045,488.60 and the 2004 simulcast partner total of $2,812,010.81.

There was a full calendar of 75 race days in 2005 with no cancellations, while the 2004 season featured 69 race days. The average total handle per day in 2005 was $110,874 compared to the 2004 average per day total handle of $127,270. The 2005 on-track average per day handle was $77,237 compared to the 2004 on-track average of $86,821. The 2005 average per day simulcast partner handle was $33,637 compared to the 2004 average per day simulcast handle of $40,499.

Rohan Singh from Hillsboro, Texas captured the 2005 jockey championship. Singh concluded the season with 399 starts and an 84-71-49 record and purse earnings of $844,296. This was the third riding title for Singh at Assiniboia Downs. Rohan previously won the jockey crown in 2000 and 2001. Singh recorded 22 more wins than Larren Delorme, who finished in second place in the standings with 395 starts and a 62-58-56 record and purse earnings of $553,048. Veteran Tim Gardiner finished in third place overall. Gardiner enjoyed 272 starts, compiled a 46-37-56 record with purse earnings of $342,773.

The 2005 trainerís crown went to Ardell Sayler of Rapid City, South Dakota. Sayler won his seventh career trainerís title since first coming to Assiniboia Downs in 1990. Sayler compiled 323 starts and a 64-53-41 record with purse earnings of $503.672. Carl Anderson finished in second place. Andersonís record from 201 starts was 40-37-26 and produced purse earnings of $538,001. Emile Corbel grabbed third place with 204 starts and a 27-23-20 record with purse earnings of $353,547.

ďAll-time career winsĒ trainer Gary Danelson added to his win total in 2005. Danelson picked up 26 more wins during the 2005 season and now has 1,036 career wins in the over 40 seasons he has competed at Assiniboia Downs.

Ken Hendricks remains the ďall-time career winsĒ jockey at Assiniboia Downs. Hendricks picked up 33 wins during the 2005 season and now has 1,654 career wins in the 30 seasons he has competed at Assiniboia Downs. Tim Gardiner follows Hendricks in the all-time career wins standings category with 1,385 wins.
