LOS ALAMITOS RACE COURSE, CYPRESS, CA…. The III in Dutch Masters III may now stand for their win in the Kindergarten Futurity. That’s because for the third time in the last six years, the famous racing operation won the Grade 1 $262,900 Kindergarten final at Los Alamitos Race Course.

Named the 2001 AQHA Champion Owner, Dr. James Streelman and Denny Boer of Dutch Masters III earned their third Kindergarten triumph after Gold Nugget Rd outfinished Love My Corona by a nose on Saturday night. Their previous wins came with Secret Card and Sassy Smith in 2000 and 2001, respectively.
Gold Nugget Rd not only defeated Love My Corona, he also held off the powerful late rally of entrymate Higher Fire. The Gold Nugget Rd-Higher Fire entry left the gate at 7-2 odds. Two Corona Special, the 8-5 favorite, broke poorly and had to rally just to run fifth in the 10-horse field.  EG High Desert Farms, which was looking to earn a record-tying third straight win in this race, finished ninth with Casique Corona.

Trained by Jaime Gomez, Gold Nugget Rd covered the 300 yards in :15.39. J.R. Ramirez piloted the brown gelding sired by Walk Thru Fire out of the Chicks Beduino mare Ya Tey Hay.

“The biggest surprise to us is Gold Nugget Rd’s backyard breeding,” Streelman said.

“Walk Thru Fire was unproven stallion when we sent Ya Tey Hay to him a couple of years ago. Meanwhile, Ya Tey Hay was a mare that we bred to First Down Dash and Strawfly Special with not much luck. We decided to take her and the mother of Higher Fire to Jaime’s stallion Walk Thru Fire and we ended up with these two horses.”

“You want to know what we did with mothers of Gold Nugget Rd and Higher Fire?” Streelman asked. “We sold them! Can you believe that? Mike Abraham wanted to buy our mare Las Alamitos and we told him that if he wanted her he had to buy five other of our mares. Ya Tey Hay and Higher Fire’s mother, Higher Math, were part of that deal. That’s the transaction that we made!

“All I can say is that that Mike Abraham is one of horse-trading son-of-a-gun,” Streelman added with a smile. “He’s ahead of the game. It’s okay thought, we have more babies coming up.”

Denny Boer credited trainer Jaime Gomez for their Kindergarten joy.

“Jaime plays a big, big role in our operation. He helps pick what mares should go to what stallions and he does a good job for us. It helps when he owns the stallion that gives us Gold Nugget Rd and Higher Fire.”

In addition to saddling all of Dutch Masters III’s Kindergarten winners, Gomez won this race with Corona Cartel in 1996. This win, however, tasted a bit sweeter for the trainer because of his connection to the stallion.

“This is the best present I’ve received all year,” he said. “Gold Nugget Rd is not a quitter so when I saw him break so well, I felt I had the race won. Higher Fire was impressive as well. She was out of it early on but she came on strong at the end.”

Gold Nugget Rd earned $110,418 for his second win in three starts. The California-bred runner entered this after running second to Finding Nemo in the trials.

“He had his head up in the air when they opened the gate,” Ramirez said. “He still came back to run second.”
Later in the trials Ramirez piloted Higher Fire to a strong victory. Ramirez opted to go with Gold Nugget Rd in the final. “I was impressed by the fact that he still qualified even though he missed the break in the trials. He broke super today.”

Owned by Christian and Ru Anna Singletary, Love My Corona earned $44,693 for her runner-up effort. Higher Fire picked up a check for $31,548.

“Love My Corona broke great,” Christian Singletary said. “We were happy because she got a clean break. We came so close to winning this race.”

After winning back-to-back runnings of the Kindergarten with Hawkish and Dash To The End, Enrique Gonzalez of EG High Desert Farms knew that it was always going to be tough to win a third straight running of this race.

“I’ve been spoiled by winning this race the past two years but I knew that this was going to be a very tough race. My congratulations to the connections of Gold Nugget Rd. He was the best horse tonight.”

The complete order of finish is as follows; Gold Nugget Rd, Love My Corona, Higher Fire, Eye Jess Cant Wait, Two Corona Special, Finding Nemo, Dash To La Jolla, AB Whos Your Daddy, Casique Corona, and Litedasher completed the field
