Julie T. Chapman of Missoula, Montana, won the prestigious Steel Dust Award at the opening of the ninth annual America’s Horse in Art Show & Sale at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in Amarillo ( The show runs through October 15.

Chapman grew up as a horse-obsessed child who enjoyed drawing the horses she loved. Her work is a contemporary take on wildlife, horses and rodeo, and often features representational subject matter on a contemporary background.

Chapman’s work has been featured in museum shows and collections throughout the world. She is represented by several galleries in the United States and abroad and is active in the art scene with a monthly newsletter. The “Artzine” highlights shows, new works and philosophical musings. Chapman currently rides and competes in both reining and dressage and travels around the world for inspiration and commissioned work.

The Steel Dust Award, generously sponsored by Bruce Carter of Bruce Carter Performance Horses, was introduced to recognize one artist each year for their work. Selected by a panel of judges, the award is based on the artistic merit of the entire body of work submitted to the show. The winner receives $1,000 and a commemorative plaque.
