NDHP prepares for July 16 opening day

Hundreds of horses, owners and trainers arrive this week to the North Dakota Horse Park in Fargo, North Dakota.

Race fans will have their chance to win more than just at the betting windows when racing returns to Fargo. To celebrate its 10th year of horse racing, the North Dakota Horse Park will be giving away $3,000 in prizes, including: a three day guided pheasant hunt in South Dakota, a trip for two to North Dakota State v. Iowa football game, and hosting special events each day of its three weekend 2016 race meet.

Highlights of the 2016 race meet:

—Six days of live racing will be held over three weekends. Races will take place on July 16, 17, 23, 24, 30, 31. Races start every day with a post time of 1:00 p.m.

—Family fun with seating options that include: Free admission for 12 and under, family gazebos and We-Fest Homestretch Seats, VIP gazebos (now featuring a mobile wagering teller) and the new addition of a party lounge. As usual, the Horse Park is accustom to hosting large groups.

—Special events, including: Hats off to Ladies, July 17—Free admission to the first 100 ladies in Derby hats, hat contests, woman owned vendor’s village, and a make your own Derby Hat booth for $25. Horses & Heroes, July 24—free admission to any Fire, Police, EMT or Military (active or retired) with ID. Kids Day, July 30—kids can partake in free activities and games, kids of all ages will enjoy the annual Mascot “Fur”turity Race.

—This year’s charity partner, “Cowboy Up Ride Against Cancer” will walk away as the biggest winner from Closing Day, July 31st. All money received from a silent auction and the new Bet on a Cure fundraiser will go towards their mission of supporting the Roger Maris Cancer Center.

—The return of three traditional high stakes races for both Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds.
