Howard Nichols’ We Like Corona, fourth in both the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity and Grade 1 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, is one of six Grade 1 finalists racing in the 400-yard trials to the $210,000 El Primero Del Ano Derby on Sunday, March 13.

A total of 21 sophomore males will be in action in the three trials at Los Alamitos with the horses with the 10 fastest times advancing to the El Primero final on Sunday, April 3. Trained by Jose Flores, We Like Corona won trials to the Ed Burke Million and Los Alamitos Two Million in impressive fashion, but will be looking to bounce back after a troubled trip in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby trials in late January. The gelding by Corona Cartel sharpened his skills with a nice looking 220-yard work in :12.50 on February 17 and rates among the favorites to advance to the El Primero final. Cruz Mendez will ride We Like Corona from post number one in the second of three trials.

We Like Corona will take on a field that includes Rancho El Alacran’s multiple Grade 1 finalist Mi Viejo, Salvador Pimienta’s Golden State Million finalist El Karma, and Ron Hartley’s rising star My Favorite Check, the winner of the Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes on February 21. Trained by Adriana Aceves and ridden by her husband, Rodrigo Aceves, Mi Viejo was fifth in the Golden State Million Futurity and won his trial to advance to the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity. Mi Viejo had a slow start and never challenge in the Two Million and was fourth in his Winter Derby trial. The Mexico-bred colt by Mr Jess Perry is a top runner and should be among the favorites in this trial. Mi Viejo will start from post five. Trained by Felix Gonzalez, El Karma ran a solid race in the Golden State Million last year and also caught the eye with a huge finish in his last start.

Two-time champion Moonist might by Hartley’s favorite horse, but My Favorite Check is among his favorites as well. The gelding by Favorite Cartel has won three of four career starts and he was very impressive when recovering from a troubled start to win in the $111,000 Maiden Stakes by a head. Tony Guymon will ride My Favorite Check from the outside post number seven.

Urschel 3-D Ranch LLC’s highly regarded Rite Regal was the fastest qualifier to the Winter Derby, but he broke in and bumped at the start and was sixth during most of that race. Rite Regal has yet to lose two consecutive starts so he’s a top candidate to be in the winner’s circle after the first El Primero trial of the night. Winter Derby finalist Chicks Fayvorite will compete in this heat. The final trial of the night will be headed by Rancho El Alacran’s Winter Derby finalist El Compa JV. He finished ahead of Chicks Fayvorite and Rite Regal in the Winter Derby. Colt As Ice and Free Swinger are two others to watch here.
