Led by defending Charger Bar Handicap winner Quirky, 14 mares have been nominated to the 2016 running of the Grade 1, $100,000 Charger Bar at 400 yards to be held at Los Alamitos on Sunday, January 3.

Trained by James Glenn Jr. for owner/breeder Ed Allred, Quirky’s victory in last year’s Charger Bar kicked-off a great season in which she also won the Grade 1 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap and the California Breeders Matron Stakes. In her last start on December 12, Quirky ran sixth to champion Heza Dasha Fire in the prestigious Grade 1 Champion of Champions at 440 yards.

Paulo Otavio Freire Macedo’s Solid Connection also competed in the Champion of Champions and has been nominated to the Charger Bar as well. The Paul Jones-trained mare won the Dana Point Handicap on June 27 and was third to Quirky in the Mildred Vessels. Lucky Seven Ranch’s Sass Me Blue, a three-time stakes placed runner, is one of the other 12 nominated to the Charger Bar. Sass Me Blue ran second to Heza Dasha Fire in the Los Alamitos Super Derby and second to Forget It in the Southern California Derby. She also ran third to Heza Dasha Fire in the Golden State Derby. Allred’s Take A Look, second in the La Primera Del Ano Derby and Las Damas Handicap and fourth in the Los Alamitos Super Derby and Governor’s Cup Derby, is also among the nominees.

The list also includes Las Damas Handicap winner Apolitical Zoom, A Ransom Handicap winner Vivid, Super Derby finalist Tallulah Moon, California Breeders Debutante winner Blabber, Luva Secret Handicap winner Skinny Jeans, plus Boundless Ocean, Bring Me Home, Morethanmeetstheye, Political Chick, and Walk Around Blues.
