It'll be a family affair of sorts in the running of the $126,150 Wild West Futurity when the father and son duo of Donald and Bret Vickery each sends out a top contender in the 350-yard, Sunday, October 25, feature at Los Alamitos.

Bret Vickery will saddle fastest qualifier—Zoomin For Spuds—in the Wild West final, while his father, Don, will send out the red-hot Fames Jess Easy. The two young runners are among the 10 juveniles that will compete in the Wild West Futurity, which has been carded as the ninth and final race on the card at the Orange County oval.

The Wild West is for horses that have raced Intermountain region, Northwest region, Nevada, and/or Canada in 2015.

Owned by Jim Walker, Zoomin For Spuds broke his maiden on the night of the Wild West trials and looked like an old pro in doing so. Ridden by Cesar De Alba for trainer Bret Vickery, the gelding by Zoomin For Bux broke sharply from post number seven and never looked back on the way to a half-length victory over Hayden Brothers Ranch's Tickle Ur Fancy. Zoomin For Spuds covered the distance in :17.584, a clocking that was nearly 1/10th of a second faster than second fastest qualifier Tickle Ur Fancy. Nevertheless, Bret Vickery knows that Zoomin For Spuds will have his work cut out in the Wild West final, not to mention against his dad’s charge, Fames Jess Sweet.

"My dad and I, we've faced each other in finals before," Bret said. "I have a lot more horses, but my dad's horses are always tough to beat. He knows what he's doing."

The winner of the Idaho Cup Futurity, Fames Jess Sweet came into this race after finishing second in The Plan Handicap in her only other previous start at Los Alamitos. The filly by One Sweet Jess has finished in the money in seven of eight career starts.

Owned and bred by Jim Walker's Zoomin For Spuds still figures to be the one to beat based on his tremendous trial victory. The chestnut gelding began his racing career in the barn of trainer Monty Arrossa at Les Bois Park in Idaho, where he showed great promise thanks to a couple of nice runner-up efforts at the Intermountain track.

"Monty had him in Boise and the horse ran some good races at Les Bois," Vickery said. "He’s a big colt that looked like he would enjoy racing at 440 yards. I got (Zoomin For Spuds) at Ruidoso Downs and he did like the 440-yard distance. He ran a nice third in his trial to the All American Futurity. We raced him in a couple of other races at Ruidoso Downs and he did well."

Zoomin For Spuds was second in a maiden race at 350 yards at Ruidoso Down, a race that set him up perfectly for the Wild West trials.

“He ran great here at 350 yards,” the trainer added.

Johnny Trotter's Bo Dash Back will look to spoil to Vickery family reunion after posting an impressive 1¼-length trial victory. Trained locally by Jaime Gomez, the Bodacious Dash filly has won both of her Los Alamitos starts by daylight.

"Bo Dash Back ran a very nice in her first start here,” said Gomez of the filly’s length victory in an allowance race on August 30. “I gave her a little turn and work to get her ready for the trials and she was pretty good (in her second start). This is the first year that I've trained for Johnny Trotter. He sent me this filly and another very nice filly named Famous Cartel Lady (who was entered to run in Saturday’s Wild West Juvenile). I like them a lot.”

Five Livestock Company LLC's First Prize Chicks beat The Plan Handicap winner Timely Delivery by a length to win the other Wild West trial. With leading Los Alamitos rider Cruz Mendez aboard for trainer Jose Flores, the sorrel filly by Spit Curl Jess will look to score her fourth win in nine career starts.

The field from the rail out is as follows: Fames Jess Sweet, Tickle Ur Fancy, On Fire, Timely Delivery, First Prize Chicks, Dr Stellar, Zoomin For Spuds, Bo Dash Back, Fabulous Corona, and Fixer Upper.
