Horse Park deals out Stakes Schedule for third racing season
By Ryan Roshau, NDHP Website

Eight Thoroughbred stakes and an equal eight Quarter Horse stakes will make up the lions’ share of purse money offered at this year's North Dakota Horse Park meet. The Thoroughbred stakes calendar carries an estimated $121,500 in purses while the Quarter Horse stakes calendar counters with $110,000.

Headlining the Thoroughbred list are the North Dakota Bred Futurity (August 7) and the North Dakota Bred Derby (Sept. 4) valued at $24,000 each. The ND Bred Futurity will once again highlight the opening weekend of racing at the park, while the ND Bred Derby will be contested on the Thoroughbred meet's final Sunday for the third consecutive season.

The Quarter Horse meet will feature the perennial richest race of the season, the North Dakota Bred QH Futurity (Sept. 5). The North Dakota Bred QH Derby (August 28) will headline the fourth weekend of racing at the little track on the prairie.

The stakes calendar is nearly identical to the 2004 edition, with the exception of the EK Rolfson Memorial. Last year, the race and its purse were split and run as a sprint early in the meet and as a route late in the meet. This year the race will be open to older horses as well as three-year-olds, run at one mile, and carry an estimated purse of $12,500.
