The winners of the Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes have a great history of moving on to win major stakes races at the Orange County oval. The list includes LDS Dash For Dylan, who became a Grade 1 stakes winner and a Champion of Champions finalist after winning the 2005 Maiden Stakes, and A Mere Splash, who became a stakes winner and a multiple Grade 1 participant after winning the 2007 running. Royal Proclamation won the 2009 Maiden Stakes and a couple of weeks later he was the winner of the El Primero Del Ano Derby.

Parsons Family Limited Partnership's Energy Cartel will be looking to duplicate Royal Proclamation's accomplishment, as he's one of the leading names in Sunday's trials to the Grade 2, $175,100 El Primero Del Ano at 400 yards. The horses with the 10 fastest times will advance to the El Primero final to be held on Saturday, April 4.

Trained by Chris O'Dell, Energy Cartel finished strongly in winning the $100,000 Maiden Stakes final on February 22. Ridden by Tony Guymon, the colt by Corona Cartel won the 350-yard race by a head while earning his first career victory in eight starts.

"I think he can still step up some more," O'Dell said. "He went to Ruidoso last year and he did not like the altitude. He bled. He came back here and it just took us a little time to get his confidence back."

The well-bred colt is out of Terrific Energy, who won the Grade 1 Charger Bar Handicap and Grade 1 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap in 2009. Terrific Energy is also the mother of Valiant Energy, who was scheduled to run in Saturday's trials to the La Primera Del Ano Derby. Energy Cartel will face the trio of Mystery Man, Kickin Your Can, and HRH Walkonfire, a trio of runners that competed in the Governor's Cup Futurity last year.

Kolleen Ledgerwood's Hot Shot heads the first trial of the night. The Walk Thru Fire gelding ran in the Ed Burke Million Futurity last year and competed in the Governor's Cup. He finished second in a trial to the Los Alamitos Winter Derby in his last outing and was the winner of his Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity trial on November 23. Golden State Million Futurity finalist Runaway Fire and local allowance winner Symbol Of Freedom will also compete in this trial.

The third and final trial will be headed by Shane OíLearyís SMS Boogie Nanu, who had a very troubled trip when racing in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby. Previously, SMS Boogie Nanu ran third in his Winter Derby trial against the likes of multiple graded futurity finalist Wild Sixes Cartel. Dutch Masters III and Jaime Gomezís Forget It is the richest horse in this field with earnings of $203,161. The Foose gelding was third in the Ed Burke Million and seventh in the Los Alamitos Two Million. Recent allowance winner Cold Cartel will also compete in this trial.
