David Munguia’s Lucas Czech looks to continue his rise into racing prominence when he headlines the running of the $100,000 Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes at 350 yards on Sunday night, February 22. Ten sophomore sprinters are in action in the eighth and final race on the card.

Lucas Czech wasted no time in making his presence known in Southern California, as he posted a wire-to-wire victory on the way to posting the fastest qualifying time to the Maiden Stakes.

(Note: see for the complete story of the trials.)

Prior to his arrival at Los Alamitos, the son of Corona Czech ran just twice in his freshman campaign in the Northern California racing circuit where he was second in a maiden race at Pleasanton and third in a maiden event at Santa Rosa. Trained locally by Adriana Aceves, Lucas Czech could earn some big headlines nationwide with a victory in the Maiden Stakes final. Ramon Sanchez gets the ride on Lucas Czech from post number nine.

Meanwhile, Felix A. Gonzalez has also enjoyed seeing his horses in action in this event, as a two-time winning owner of the Maiden Stakes. Gonzalez won this race with A Mere Splash in 2007 and with Brooklyn Boy in 2010. A Mere Splash’s half brother, A Mere Patron, looks to give the owner his third victory in the Maiden Stakes. Other top contenders to watch include Golden State Million Futurity finalist Runaway Fire and trial winner Cruel Ride.
