April 19 marks Opening Day for the short race meetings at Sun Downs (SuD, Kennewick WA) and Fort Pierre (Ftp, Fort Pierre SD).

At Sun Downs, 55 go postward today in eight races—five for Quarter Horses and three for Thoroughbreds. The feature races of the day are races 4 and 5—trials for the Sun Downs/AQHA Maiden Challenge.

Easter Sunday, April 20, should be huge at Sun Downs, where 10 races include five trials to the Pot O' Gold Futurity, two trials to the Merial Sun Downs Distaff Challenge, and a Handicap for Thoroughbreds—the Dorothy Adams Buttons & Bows Handicap.

Thirty-two 2-year-old Quarter Horses are entered for this year's Pot O' Gold, annually the first open futurity in the region. That number represents a 52% increase over last season, when 21 entered in three trials.

At Fort Pierre, eight races are on tap—six for Thoroughbreds and two for Quarter Horses—with a total of 56 horses entered. Note: there is no racing on Easter Sunday, April 20, at Fort Pierre.
