Opening day card drawn at Portland Meadows

Sixty-three horses were entered for the eight race card for Portland Meadows opening day program on Sunday, July 21. First post time is at 1:45 p.m. local time and Sunday will be the first of 49 live racing days at Portland Meadows for the 2013/2014 season.

“We’re very excited to get this season underway,” said Assistant General Manager and Director of Racing Jerry Kohls. “We’re thankful the horsemen showed up at the entry box and we’re happy about opening day card.”

Many Portland Meadows based riders are back this season including Ruben Camacho, Luis Gonzalez, and Kain De La Cruz. Matt Hagerty is listed on a number of runners opening day, as is Jorge Rosales. New this season are veteran journeyman Lorenzo Lopez, as well as two new apprentice riders, Maggie Hardison and Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa.

Last year’s champion rider Luis Torres is still recovering from an injury he sustained in April, but is expected to return to the saddle soon. Also look for some Emerald Downs-based riders like Rocco Bowen, Javier Matias, and Anne Sanguinetti to start riding at Portland Meadows once Wednesdays come into the mix on August 14.

Portland Meadows opening day will not only feature eight great races, but there will be some awesome activities going on at the track. The Goorin Bros. Ladies Hat Contest will award great prizes for the biggest and best hats. There will also be a great Craft Beer Festival, Cornhole Toss where fans can win up to $100, live music from the Kung Pao Chickens, 750 the Game live on-site broadcast, a HappyMatic Photo Booth, Horseplay Kids Zone and much more!
