Friday Night Live Thoroughbred racing resumes tonight at Hastings Racecourse with a seven-race card that features fillies and mares going 1-1/16 miles in the sixth race. The morning line favorite at 2-to-1 is Notis Her, trained by Barbara Heads and ridden by Scott Williams. First post is at 7:00 p.m.

The talk of the town has been the return of the popular Wiener Dog Races on Saturday and Sunday. A total of 64 dachshunds have entered the 5th annual competition sponsored by Schneiders, with five qualifying heats on Saturday between live Thoroughbred races 2-6 and three qualifying heats on Sunday between Thoroughbred races 2-4. The Top Dog championship final goes after the sixth race on Sunday with $1,000 as top prize with a special ceremony in the Wiener’s Circle.

Incredibly enough, Joey, from North Vancouver, owned by Nancy Green, won all four previous championships but won’t compete for a fifth consecutive title. However, ‘Joey’ is expected to make a special guest appearance.

The Wiener Dog Races have been a big hit as family entertainment at Hastings and as always, admission is free. The seven-race Thoroughbred cards Saturday and Sunday start at 1:50 p.m.

Two $50K stakes on Sunday card

2-year-olds will be showcased Sunday in the two $50,000 stakes on the card: the Boulevard Casino for fillies and the New Westminster for colts and geldings.

Also on Sunday the late Ronnie Williams will be honored in the Hall of Fame spotlight. Inducted into the B.C. Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 1989, Williams was an accomplished jockey and his son Danny and grandson Scott carried on the tradition. Scott goes into the three-day racing weekend in fourth place in a tightly contested run for the 2013 Leading Rider title.

With three wins last Sunday, Aaron Gryder sits atop the jockey stats with 33 wins, followed by Amadeo Perez (30) Frank Fuentes (27) and Williams (23).

Ronnie Williams’ wife Barb is the family matriarch. She raised Danny and has also been a major influence in Scott’s life. Barb will be representing her husband in Sunday’s tribute prior to the third race.
