Rillito Park opens its 16-day season this weekend with 109 horses in 16 races. First post on both Saturday and Sunday is at 1:00 p.m.

Last season's leading rider Carl Williams is named up on only one horse—longshot Devils Afleet in the fifth race on Sunday. Williams has been been riding full-time at Turf Paradise since their season opened in September.

Monica Ortega, last season's leading Thoroughbred trainer, begins the season with a total of eight starters—five on opening day and three on Sunday.

Los Alamitos invader Makn A Legacy has been installed as the morning line 5-to-2 favorite in the $4K PCHA Derby, Sunday's race #7. Makn A Legacy stumbled in his most recent start after previously competing in the Mount Rushmore Overnight Handicap and in trials to the Wild West Futurity.

Every other horse in the Derby last started at Turf Paradise, including Black Storm Regard, who finished fourth in the $52,772 AQRA Turf Paradise Open Quarter Horse Futurity on December 9. Emilio Tapia, who guided the Oklahoma-bred filly to her win in the trials for that big race, is named up.
