It lived up to every bit of billing every handicapper thought it would. Chancy Chancy setting the pace, Pete’s Dolly close by and Quiz the Maid toiling in mid-pack, waiting to strike at any moment.

Breaking alertly and going straight to the front, Chancy Chancy set early fractions of :23 3/5, 48 2/5 with Pete’s Dolly stalking behind.

“I told [rider] Melissa [Peery] to get straight out in front and take the lead” said owner and trainer Dave Runyon. “I didn’t care if she got hooked early, I wanted her on the lead. I told her to make that horse [Pete’s Dolly] come after you.”

As instructed, Peery took a clear lead before hitting the first quarter. As Pete’s Dolly continued to rate off the pace, Quiz the Maid sat exactly where most expected her to, in mid pack.

By the time they ran three quarters in 1:13 4/5, Chancy Chancy was offered slight encouragement by Peery as Quiz the Maid strengthened her approach toward the leader. Pete’s Dolly, working hard every step of the way, finally gave way at the eighth pole.

It all came down to Chancy Chancy and Quiz the Maid. Again.

Two weeks ago the pair locked horns in mid stretch, vying for the spoils in a similar Invitational. Chancy Chancy drew clear enough to win and impress everyone watching that afternoon.

Saturday’s feature on January 22 was no different.

“We had to use everything we had this time” said Peery. “Once Quiz the Maid started to get to us, she dug in hard again – just like last time. She really wanted to go today. She did, and she did it all on her own. I just tapped her a couple of times and that was all she needed.”

Chancy Chancy didn’t make it look that easy though, capturing the one mile event in 1:41 3/5 by a neck. Quiz the Maid finished second and two and a half lengths back was Pete’s Dolly; the post time favorite at 6/5.

Quiz the Maid also went off at 6/5 and Chancy Chancy – who had defeated the Maid by a length and a quarter last out – returned $13.20 to win.

Chancy Chancy is a five-year-old bay mare by Stately Wager out of Chancy Choice. She was bred in Oregon by Dr. & Mrs. Jack Root. She’s owned by Dave and Patricia Runyon and trained by Dave Runyon.
