Hastings Racecourse-based trainer Troy Taylor sends out two horses on Friday, including Commander in the 1-3/4-mile, $500,000 Breeders’ Cup Marathon. North America Thoroughbred Racing Company Inc. owns both Commander and the Taylor-trained Hoist, who will race in the 1-1/8-mile Twilight Derby, the final race on the Friday card.

Commander has the 11 slot in a full 14-gate race, and will no doubt benefit from the guidance of his regular rider, “Super Mario” Gutierrez, who has been aboard for half the gelding’s eight wins. (See for more information about this runner.)

Expect to see Commander try for the lead, as his best recent races have been won in front-running style. With a packed field like the one carded for the Marathon, that early speed might be an excellent asset.

In his most recent race, Hoist finished third in the Grade III British Columbia Derby after a leading for most of the 1-1/8-mile dirt race. The gelding, who had the three previous turf races in which he was entered moved off the grass, might prefer this distance on the turf.
