The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) has announced that Cindy Pierson Dulay has won the Media Eclipse Award for Photography for her shot of Thoroughbred Stephan’s Angel leaping in the air while being saddled before the Miss Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course last year. Pierson Dulay’s photograph appeared in the July 2004 issue of Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred. The award is the first for Pierson Dulay.

“I’m thrilled to win this award in a business I love very much,” said Pierson Dulay, a resident of Pickering, Ontario. “The connections decided not to saddle Stephan’s Angel in the enclosed paddock at Pimlico and instead brought her outside in front of the stands. I do look for horses acting up from time to time, but this was a lucky shot.”

The panel of judges in the Photography category was comprised of Steve Fine of Sports Illustrated, Clem Murray of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Danny Farrell, retired New York Daily News photographer.

Honorable mentions in the Photography category went to Bill Denver for his May 14 photo in USA Today of Smarty Jones galloping alone at Pimlico; and to Jonathan Palmer for capturing jockey Clayton Chipperfield performing a back flip dismount in a shot that appeared in The Steeplechase Times on April 23, 2004.

Eclipse Awards are given to recognize members of the media for outstanding coverage of Thoroughbred racing. Eclipse Awards are bestowed upon horses and individuals whose outstanding achievements have earned them the title of Champion in their respective categories. Awards also are given to recognize members of the media for outstanding coverage of Thoroughbred racing.

The Eclipse Awards are named after the great 18th-century racehorse and sire Eclipse, who began racing at age five and was undefeated in 18 starts, including eight walkovers. Eclipse sired the winners of 344 races, including three Epsom Derbies.

The 2004 Eclipse Awards will be held on Monday, January 24, 2005 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills, Calif. For hotel accommodations and Eclipse Awards dinner reservations, contact Debbie Blair at the NTRA’s Lexington office, (800) 792-6872, or e-mail dblair@ntra.com.
