Portland, OR - In Sunday’s feature on January 2 at Portland Meadows, My Friend Dave staged an upset in the six-horse field in the $7,000 Oregon H.B.P.A. Invitational Handicap for older horses.

Setting the stage in the early going was Parisian Slew, whose tepid fractions of :24 3/5 and :49 1/5 ultimately set things up nicely for the winner.

Stalking from the outside, a mere two lengths off for half a mile, My Friend Dave coasted behind early pacesetter Parisian Slew and Sensationalsonny. When reaching the three-quarter marker, rider Jose Zunino pulled the trigger on his charge and began to steadily take command. Pressed to work hard through the final straight, My Friend Dave held off the late running Mt. Vista and even money favorite Yesss.

He completed the mile event in 1:39 3/5, winning by half a length and returning $30.80.

This was the first winner of the meet for My Friend Dave, who entered Sunday’s feature after being blanked in his last three attempts.

Owned by David Benson and Darrell Caron, the five-year-old Oregon-bred son of Canít Be Slew earned his fourth win in 13 starts, increasing his lifetime earnings to $15,851.
