Quarter Horse trainers stuffed the entry box for Saturday's Bitterroot Futurity trials at Les Bois Park. The entire race card is trial races—nine of them, with five full gates and four nearly full.

“We are pleased with the quality of Quarter Horse entries competing in this week’s live racing trials, said Clayton Russell, vice president of racing for the Idaho Quarter Horse Association. “We have Quarter Horse entries from eight states competing for the upcoming Bitterroot Futurity.

The entry total of 86 compares favorably to the nearly miraculous 76 horses for eight races in 2011 at Les Bois Park. "Miraculous" because horsemen were asked to wait until July for trials and the final (which usually all run in May), to be run at a track whose opening wasn't exactly certain until April.

The health of the Bitterroot program is evident when you also compare 2012 totals to previous years:

• 2010, Pocatello Downs, 79 horses in 9 races
• 2009, Pocatello Downs, 83 horses in 10 races
• 2008, Les Bois Park, 79 horses in 10 races

Eleven winners, all of whom broke their maidens at either Dixie Downs or Gem County, are among the 86 entries.

First post on Saturday is 5:30 p.m. The Bitterroot Futurity final is scheduled for May 28.
