Bobby Johnson’s barn holds eight of the 14 contestants this weekend in the $15,000 South Dakota-bred Quarter Horse Futurity and $8,650 South Dakota-bred Quarter Horse Derby.

In Saturday’s Futurity, the top two qualifiers—Webb Ranch’s Webb Famous Fame (#5) and June LaCroix’s Brief Case Of Corona (#6)—come from Johnson’s barn. Johnson also brings Charmed N Sixy (#2) and Tickle The Ivorys (#7).

Johnson also has four in Sunday’s Derby, including LaCroix’s Fast Eddys Eyeyinyou, winner of last year’s Futurity. Johnny Johnson’s Meter Me A Lady, winner of last year’s Northern Plains Stallion Futurity at Canterbury Park, is another Johnson trainee, and the 5-to-2 morning line favorite.

In the Open divisions, trainers Ernest Fennell and Jesse Villegas account for 12 of the 15 entries. Fennell has three and Villegas two in the Open Derby on Saturday, while Villegas has four and Fennell three in the Open Futurity on Sunday.

Aside from the featured Quarter Horse championships, both days’ cards look outstanding, with 68 horses in nine races on Saturday, for an excellent 94%-full gate percentage. Hard to improve upon, but Sunday’s card does just that, with 70 horses entered in nine races, a 97% full rate.

First post both days is 1:00 p.m.
