Los Alamitos Race Course, Cypress, CYPRESS, CA - Muller Racing Inc.'s Ocean Runaway was the overwhelming runaway choice for Horse of the Meet in the media awards announced on closing night of the 2004 Los Alamitos season.

Ocean Runaway, the winner of the $1,002,400 Golden State Futurity and $1,509,324 Los Alamitos Million, received 14 of 15 votes for Horse of the Meet. Trained by Denny Ekins, Ocean Runaway finished the year as the country's leading money winner with over $1.5 million in earnings. The colt by First Down Dash, bred by Daniel Lucas, was also the unanimous choice as 2-Year-Old of the Meet and 2-Year-Old Colt of the Meet.

For the second year in a row, Kirk Goodfellow's Catchmeinyourdreams was voted Aged Horse of the Meet and Aged Gelding of the Meet. Catchmeinyourdreams became only the fourth horse to win back-to-back runnings of the $200,000 Los Alamitos Invitational Championship. Bred by Ed Allred, Catchmeinyourdreams won the Grade 1 Go Man Go Handicap and finished fourth in the Champion of Champions. He received one vote for Horse of the Meet.

Owned and bred by Spencer Childers, Be A Bono was the 3-Year-Old of the Meet and the unanimous choice as 3-Year-Old Gelding of the meet. Be A Bono won the $605,000 Los Alamitos Super Derby and was second in the $500,000 Champion of Champions.

Jose Santos' Buccaneer Beach was honored as the Aged Stallion of the Meet. The winner of the Los Alamitos Winter Derby, Buccaneer Beach will stand at Double Bar S Ranch in 2005.
The closest race in the ballot was for Aged Mare, as only one vote separated winner Mongoose Jet Eye from Mini Rock. Mongoose Jet Eye, who defeated the opposite sex in the Vessels Maturity, received eight of 15 votes. Supporters of Mini Rock pointed to her victory over Mongoose Jet Eye in the Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap. Mongoose Jet Eye did post a solid third place finish in the Champion of Champions.

Enrique Gonzalez' Hawkish was the top 3-Year-Old Colt after receiving 13 of 15 votes. Ed Calvert's Champion of Champions winner Cash For Kas was voted the top 3-Year-Old Filly in 14 of 15 ballots. Dutch Masters III's Chicks Like Us topped Like Frankie And Me in the 2-Year-Old Gelding category by an 11 to 4 margin. Chicks Like Us' victory in the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity and appearances in the Golden State Million and Los Alamitos Million overcame Like Frankie And Me's runner-up finish in the Golden State Million and appearance in the Los Alamitos Million.

Vessels Stallion Farm's Hardly Hateful, who finished second in the Los Alamitos Million and qualified to the Golden State Million, finished ahead Lindas Dasher, the runner-up in three major futurities, and Kindergarten Futurity winner Dash To The End. Hardly Hateful's name was on 10 ballots, while Lindas Dasher was on four and Dash To The End on one.

Four horses received votes in the category of 870-Yard Horse of the Meet. However, Marathon National winner Prankster CF was still the clear winner by a 10 to 3 margin over Bac In The Saddle. Kash To Splah and Rockin The Ship were named in one ballot each.

There were a lot of opinions as to the Race of the Meet with five Grade 1 events receiving votes. Ocean Runaway's victory in the 10th running of the Los Alamitos Million was named Race of the Meet by a 5 to 4 margin over Cash For Kas' upset victory over Be A Bono in the Champion of Champions. Ocean Runaway's impressive win in the Golden State Million had three votes, while Be A Bono's come-from-behind triumph in the Los Alamitos Super Derby earned the race a pair of votes. Catchmeinyourdreams' Los Alamitos Championship victory received the other vote.

Paul Jones and Oscar Ramirez's Eminent Esquire received 13 votes on his way to being named Claimer of the Meet. Eminent Esquire won a season-high seven races, including the Professional's Choice California Claiming Stakes.

Voting media members included representatives of the American Quarter Horse Association, Orange County Register, Track Magazine, Speedhorse, TVG, PCQHRA, and The Racing Journal, as well selected track officials. For more information, please call 714-820-2690.
