If there’s such a thing as a “horse for the course,” Derive would be the horse.

A perfect five-for-five locally, Derive will go for his sixth consecutive win in the $35,000 Coyote Handicap on Saturday at Turf Paradise.

Despite his unblemished record, Derive has not scared away competition for the 6˝ furlong test. Derive, who will carry highweight of 123 pound, concedes from five to 11 pounds to his nine rivals. Regular rider and current leader of the jockey colony, Jorge Carreno, will be aboard Derive.

Derive arrived in October, promptly winning an allowance test. The 6-year-old son of Cozzene took a 2˝-month rest, resurfacing in January to reel off three more wins, including the Swift Stakes. Taking a step up into higher-level stakes company for Canadian owner Rick and Wiest and trainer Robertino Diodoro, Derive posted a nose victory in the $75,000 Phoenix Gold Cup, the track’s premier sprint race, on February 18.

Claimed by Diodoro for $32,000 at Santa Anita in March of last year, Derive has won seven of 21 career starts with five seconds and four thirds for earnings of $212,288.
