Arapahoe Park to increase purses to reward horsemen for increased attendance and handle

Through Friday, July 22, the horsemen have put on quite a show at Arapahoe Park, leading to an average daily attendance increase of 21%, to 1,605, and an average daily handle increase of 4%, to $124,422, compared to the same date last year.

Citing the increases in attendance and wagering handle during the 2011 racing season, Arapahoe Park plans to raise purses for the final four weekends of the meeting, beginning on July 29. Purses for all overnight races will be increased by $1,500, while all trial races will be increased by $500.

To be up in handle and attendance is really exciting for us, and we want to give back to the horsemen, said racing secretary Bill Powers. I think were one of the few tracks in the country that can boast being up in handle for two years in a row. The field sizes have been big, and I think our quality of horses is better this year.
