Stating that they have "exhausted all options," Jeff Wasowicz, Chairman of the Yavapai County Farm and Agricultural Association Board of Directors, told the Arizona Racing Commission this afternoon that his group would not be able to conduct their 56-day 2011 Yavapai Downs race meet, which was scheduled to begin this Saturday, May 28.

For more information about the reasons for the closure, see http://www.theracingjournal.com/news/news-1648.html.

The race office actually took entries for Saturday's races, attracting 90 horses for nine races with total purses of $51,200.

"I find the actions of Yavapai Downs management reprehensible," said an unidentified horseman during public comment. "You've wrecked a lot of lives up there [at the track]. You got them to come to your track under false pretenses. I talked to one horseman about whether he would take his horses to another track and he told me he doesn't have enough money for gas to go anywhere."
