Kalispell to MBoHR: “Let’s play two” (weekends)

Janis Schoepf, Kalispell Race Meet manager, saw an opportunity in the cancellation Missoula’s race days—the availability to run more than one weekend.

“Getting an additional weekend allows us to have real trials and finals,” says Schoepf. “Without Great Falls, there’s no Charlie Russell Futurity and Derby, and without Missoula, we have the chance to host the horses that the Charlie Russell races would normally attract.”

The plan is for racing on Friday, August 12, for futurity and derby trials. “Of course we’ll have some Thoroughbred races and hopefully even a Bonus Challenge race that day, too,” according to Schoepf.

Finals would be conducted over the following weekend, Saturday and Sunday, August 20 and 21, race days that were previously awarded to the Kalispell Race Meet. Information about stakes races and a condition book should be available soon.

Schoepf indicated that the Montana Board of Horse Racing has signed off on the tentative plans.
